1920’s Football games were played in a field on Division Street on the northern part of town. The games were played in the afternoon (no lights). Students were permitted to leave school to attend. For the girls, basketball was played in black bloomers.
1929 Coweta football team played a team in Jenks. Coweta lost 100 to 0 (it was rumored that the Jenks field was covered with “Sand Burrs” and Coweta was poorly clad to deal with this, while Jenks was dressed to handle the elements). The average age of the Jenks team was 22. Chuck Dunn was a mere lad of 17 on the Coweta team. Chuck recalls Jenks uniforms consisting of 3-4 sweaters, 3 pairs of knee length socks, leather gloves and a ski mask covering their face. Chuck is quoted as saying, “We kicked on first down, and did not make a tackle. The score was 100 to 0.”
1985 Coweta won its first state title, in the sport of wrestling. Since then, Coweta has won 8 more state crowns. The Tigers now have two state titles in wrestling, one in baseball, one in women’s golf, three in fast pitch softball, and two state championships in girl’s cross-country. The state championship banners currently hang in the high school gymnasium.
2014 Coweta now offers eight male sports including football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, XC, track, golf, and baseball. Coweta also offers eight female sports including basketball, fast-pitch softball, XC, volleyball, track, soccer, golf, and competitive cheer.
